We have an exciting opportunity for two  band 5 Staff Nurses on an extremely busy Surgical Assessment Unit  The successful applicants  will gain experience in caring for patients with a wide variety of Surgical conditions. 

The Surgical Assessment unit is a extremely busy 38 bedded ward with an extremely  busy Assessment Area . The Assessment area can have up to 40 patients  per day from different specialities and portals. 

You will be flexible in your approach to the role and respond appropriately to the demands of an ever changing workload.  

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised patient care, working in partnership with patients, their carers and the multi-disciplinary team to ensure the patient’s physical, spiritual and emotional needs are met.
  • Formulate and deliver high quality patient care without direct supervision.
  • Recognise changes in patients’ conditions which require the intervention of others and ensure that timely referrals are made or escalation procedures enacted as appropriate.
  • Ensure patient safety is maintained at all times. Record and report adverse and potentially adverse events and assist with investigation of such events, ensuring learning is shared with the wider team(s).
  • Record information about patients in a safe, accurate and consistent manner using appropriate tools and techniques, including electronic and written formats as close to point of care as possible.
  • Access and use patient clinical diagnostic information to inform clinical decisions.

The Surgical Assessment Unit is a 38 bedded ward providing care predominantly for general surgical patients. We have a and we can take a variety of surgical patients who are assessed and will leave the department with a plan of care. The team have motivated staff who believe in making the patient journey a good experience.

The ward has a reputation for delivering high quality of care with a holistic approach.  We work closely with a range of multi-disciplinary teams, including the Colorectal Nurse Specialist, IBD Nurse specialist, Bariatric Nurse specialist, Outreach, Nutritional Team and Vascular team.

The Surgical Assessment Unit believes in our Trust values; we are a caring, ambitious team, who are motivated to keep up to date with training and development.
