The Children’s Unit at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford consists of 36 beds (including a 3 bed oncology unit), and is an acute general paediatric ward caring for babies, children and young people aged 0-18 years with medical, surgical, orthopaedic and oncology conditions.  There are a variety of areas within the unit, general inpatients, day surgery, a children’s assessment unit, higher dependency beds and an oncology unit. The paediatric services at Shrewsbury consist of an outpatients department and a Children’s Medical Day Unit.

Main duties of the job

You will need to possess good communication and interpersonal skills.  A polite and courteous manner towards patients and relatives will be essential for this role, together with your ability to work under pressure as part of a team, as well as organising your own workload.

The main responsibilities of this post will be:

- To work alongside all disciplines of staff, monitoring the ward environment

- Undertaking housekeeping tasks to ensure the ward environment is clean and presentable also taking into account infection control policies and procedures are followed.

- Manage the availability of stores and supplies to ensure the smooth running of the ward.

-Ensuring at all meal times diet  and refreshments are given to the patients, making sure all their dietary needs are met.

- It is an important factor for the candidate to be able to communicate well with patients, relatives and colleagues.

- Although you will be part of a team there will be occasions when the candidate will work on their own so initiative and workload prioritising will be essential.

 The position may involve weekend working to ensure the continuity of service delivery.

Nursing and Midwifery - Acute Medicine Patient Flow Co-ordinator

Emergency Department

Main duties of the job

To work directly with the NiC to ensure the safe and effective flow of patients through the department, directly supporting the Emergency Departments 4 hours patient safety standard.

To monitor performance in all areas of Acute Medicine, particularly Same Day Emergency Care. This will include chasing diagnostic results to support clinical decision-making as appropriate and the escalation of unnecessary delays to the relevant departments to support patient flow. 

To support the services performance in relation to Care Quality Indicators, with appropriate escalation to the NiC, Acute Physicians and Departmental Management Team as necessary. 

To liaise with work with Inter-disciplinary teams regarding the admission and discharge arrangements of patients. 

To ensure that Internal Professional Standards (IPS) are adhered to – initially contacting speciality doctors directly and escalating to NiC, Acute Physicians, and Departmental Management Team when standards are not adhered to.

To collate information in relation to non-compliance by speciality teams to IPS.

To liaise with other agencies and carers as required to provide effective communication and thus to enable timely discharge / transfer of patients out of the Acute Medicine Service.
