Clinical Support - Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant - Ophthalmology Outpatients

Outpatients Ophthalmology

  • This role supports patients as they move through the eye clinic, helping them feel safe, comfortable, and informed.
  • You will help nurses with basic care tasks, such as taking observations and assisting with mobility.
  • You will talk with patients and their families, helping them understand what is happening and where they need to go.
  • You will keep patient information private and help with simple admin tasks like checking clinic lists and keeping records up to date.
  • You will help keep the clinic clean, tidy, and well stocked, and prepare equipment for use.
  • You will learn new eye‑care skills, such as checking vision, helping with scans, and supporting minor eye procedures.

Clinical Support - Pharmacy Support Officer (Distribution and Stores)

Pharmacy

  • The role supports pharmacy technicians and pharmacists by helping to prepare, deliver and manage medicines across the hospital.
  • It involves keeping stock levels safe and organised, delivering medicines to wards, and carrying out basic dispensing tasks under supervision.
  • The post holder will follow set procedures at all times to keep patients and staff safe.
  • They will also help with reception duties, answer routine enquiries, and work with many different healthcare staff.
  • Training is provided, including completing the NVQ Level 2 in Pharmacy Services.

Clinical Support - Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner (Internal only)

Theatres

  • The role is a three-year apprenticeship where you work and study to become a Registered Operating Department Practitioner.
  • You will learn in hospital theatres and on different placements while also studying at Staffordshire University.
  • You will help keep patients safe and cared for before, during and after surgery, always working under supervision as you build your skills.
  • You must complete all parts of the course, meet professional standards and show the right values and behaviour.
  • You will work as part of a team, learn new skills, and take responsibility for your own learning.
  • When you finish the apprenticeship and meet all requirements, you may be able to move into a full-time role.

Clinical Support - Operating Department Orderly

Theatres

  • The role supports the theatre team by helping to keep patients safe before, during and after surgery.
  • It involves moving patients safely, preparing equipment and keeping the theatre clean and ready to use.
  • The post holder will follow health and safety rules, report any problems and keep accurate records.
  • They will work with nurses and other staff to make sure the department runs smoothly and that patients are treated with care and respect.
  • The role also includes checking stock, helping with equipment and taking part in training to build skills.

Clinical Support - Phlebotomy Services Deputy Manager

Phlebotomy

  • This job involves taking blood from adults and children in different places, such as wards, clinics, and the community.
  • You will make sure all samples are labelled, recorded, and sent to the lab safely and on time.
  • You will help train new staff, support the team, and help with rotas, meetings, and daily tasks.
  • You will use different equipment and computer systems to do your work and keep records up to date.
  • You will talk with patients, families, and staff, and help keep the working area clean and safe.
  • You will work different shifts over seven days and keep your skills and knowledge up to date.

Clinical Support - Medical Laboratory Technician

Cellular Pathology Department

  • The role supports the hospital’s laboratory service by helping with everyday tasks that keep tests running smoothly.
  • You will handle patient samples, label them, enter details on the computer and prepare them for testing.
  • You will work with different teams in Pathology and may move between the department’s three laboratory sites.
  • You will follow written and verbal instructions, keep good records and help look after equipment and supplies.
  • You will take part in out-of-hours shifts, including evenings, nights and weekends, once trained.
  • You must always follow safety rules and help keep the working area clean and well organised.

Clinical Support - Associate Practitioner of Biomedical Science

Cellular Pathology

  • The role supports the diagnostic service by carrying out a range of laboratory tasks after training. It involves running and looking after slide scanners to make sure scans are quick, clear and good quality.
  • You will work across all areas of the Cellular Pathology and Histology labs, helping with samples, data entry and technical tests.
  • You will follow set procedures, organise your own workload and ask senior staff for help when needed.
  • You will help train and guide junior staff and work safely with chemicals, equipment and patient samples.
  • You may work across different hospital sites and take part in extended hours or seven-day working when required.

Salary: £28,392.00 – £31,157 per annum Closing Date: 11/06/2026 Job Ref: 223-APB-366 Location: The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Contract: 6 months (Fixed Term) Hours: Full time - 37.5 hours per week (with participation of the 6 day working week including Saturdays)
