Job overview

As a Delivery Suite and Triage Midwifery Coordinator at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, I play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe, effective, and compassionate delivery of maternity care across the maternity service. The role involves providing clinical leadership and operational oversight within the labour ward and maternity triage areas, coordinating patient flow, managing acuity, and ensuring that women and birthing people receive timely, high-quality care throughout their maternity journey.

Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, including obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatal colleagues, and senior midwives, You will be  responsible for the day-to-day coordination of staffing, resources, and clinical activity. This includes assessing service demands, prioritising workload, escalating concerns, and making dynamic decisions to maintain safety and quality standards during often complex and unpredictable situations.

A key aspect of the role is providing expert clinical support and guidance to midwifery staff, promoting evidence-based practice, and ensuring compliance with national maternity standards and Trust policies. I oversee the management of emergency situations, support escalation processes, and contribute to the continuous improvement of maternity services through audit, quality assurance, and learning from incidents.

Main duties of the job

You are responsible for the effective coordination and management of clinical activity within the maternity triage and delivery suite environments, ensuring the provision of safe and woman-centred care. The role requires strong clinical leadership, advanced decision-making skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities within a fast-paced and often unpredictable setting.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the day-to-day operational management of the delivery suite and maternity triage, transfers, discharges, and staffing resources to ensure safe service delivery. You will continually assess maternity service capacity and acuity, making timely decisions regarding patient flow, escalation, and resource allocation to maintain patient safety and quality standards.

A significant aspect of the role involves providing clinical support, guidance, and supervision to midwifery and multidisciplinary team members. You will act as a senior point of contact for complex clinical situations, supporting the management of obstetric emergencies and ensuring appropriate escalation processes are followed.

In addition, you will advocate for women and their families, ensuring that care is personalised, compassionate, and responsive to individual needs. You will promote a positive culture of teamwork, continuous learning, and professional development, supporting staff wellbeing and fostering an environment where excellence in maternity care can thrive.

Working for our organisation

Our Poppy’s Promise Commitment

We believe that compassionate care sits at the heart of everything we do. Every member of our team —  clinical or non-clinical — plays a vital role in ensuring that patients, families, and colleagues are treated with dignity, empathy, and respect at all times.

We expect all staff to demonstrate compassion not only through their words, but through their actions: by listening attentively, communicating clearly and kindly, and recognising  individual needs, feelings, and circumstances of those in our care.

Effective communication is central to safe and high-quality healthcare. We value colleagues who take the time to understand others, explain information in a  meaningful way, and respond to concerns with patience and understanding.

By joining our team, you are committing to uphold these values — ensuring that every patient feels heard, respected, and valued, and that compassion is embedded in every interaction, every day.

Hospital Transformation Programme (HTP)

Our Service will relocate to The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital in 2028 as part of HTP. This move will bring specialist services together in a modern, purpose-built facility to improve patient care and team experience.

We are actively recruiting, and successful candidates will be expected to move with the Service in early 2028. The relocation will follow a formal management of change process, including full consultation and support for staff.
