We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Cancer Services team to provide administrative support within the Urgent Suspected Cancer referrals office based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The successful applicant will be patient focused; have excellent communication and organisational skills; be familiar with all of the Trust’s computer systems including Somerset and have excellent IT skills including Excel. Previous experience of administrative and telecommunications work is essential to the role as well as a resilience to deal with the fast pace of the role and the emotional and sometimes distressing nature of cancer.

Main duties of the job

  • To undertake booking and scheduling duties in the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral office; all patients are contacted by telephone
  • The delivery of a patient cancellation/postponement service
  • Using Trust systems PAS, CAREFLOW, ERS and Somerset Cancer Register
  • Develop & maintain effective communication skills liaising with patients, GP’s and internal/external contacts
  • Responsible for ensuring that the booked appointment is made within the designated time limit
  • Responsible for ensuring that new patient clinics are booked to their maximum capacity
  • Responsible for the checking and registering of new patient referrals and the distribution of letters for grading by individual consultants
  • To meet performance standards specific to the area they are working in
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times
  • Work within well defined boundaries, using initiative to make planning decisions as required.  They will have access to manager / supervisor at all times

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will be joining the Urgent Suspected Cancer Referral team based at The Royal Shrewsbury Team.  The team is a small, dynamic  team of  Urgent Appointment Co-ordinators and 1 Team Leader but also part of the larger cancer services team.   As a department we work closely with the Clinical team within the trust.   We promote a friendly, approachable and supportive team atmosphere to deliver a high standard service.
