An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists, to join our friendly team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH).

This is a 1-year fixed term post available in Haematology/Blood Transfusion, covering maternity leave. Staff routinely work at a single base but will be required to work at either of our alternative sites, The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, or The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital, Oswestry. Suitably qualified trainees will be considered for a Band 5 post.

The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Departments are looking to appoint a Biomedical Scientist, to assist with the provision of a diagnostic service and support the delivery of a 24 hour per day, 7 days per week service as part of a 37.5 hour working week - including evenings, nights, weekends and bank/public holidays. 

Main duties of the job

  • Assist in the provision of a diagnostic service.
  • Perform competently a range of laboratory techniques and procedures in one or more section(s) of the Blood Science Department either singly, or as part of a team, that equate to the training and level of responsibility of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered BMS.
  • Supervise support workers, students and other untrained or unqualified staff in the performance of tests according to  standard operating procedures.
  • Work flexibly, as part of a team to support the delivery of a 
  • 24 hour per day, 7 days per week service. Commence a period of specialism training, culminating in the award of an IBMS Specialist Diploma

Working for your organisation

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) Pathology Services are accredited to UKAS standards. 

 The Haematology section is equipped with  Sysmex analysers.  Automated Biorad Equipment is in use in the  Blood Transfusion Department. 

The departments are approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged

The Trust

The two SATH Hospitals, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford are just a 30 minute drive apart. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.

Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital is a specialist orthopaedic hospital in the outskirts of Oswestry,  the Blood Science service is provided by SATH.
