Job overview

We are looking for two enthusiastic Locum Consultant Urological Surgeons with core Urology skills to work in our dynamic and well-established team. This is an additional post to further complement our team of 6 Consultant Urologists.

Full time and part time applications are welcome, and the posts are available as soon as an ideal candidate is found. 

The purpose of this posts is to provide additional capacity to manage our ever-increasing workload. Any sub specialist interest will be considered. This may include a paediatric urology interest which is presently supported by links with Birmingham Children Hospital or functional urology through the outreach to the spinal injuries unit in Oswestry.

We have recently invested in new state of the art laser facilities that make this an exciting time to join the team.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will join a team of 6 substantive Consultants providing Urology services to the County of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and a sizeable part of the adjacent Welsh county of Powys, serving a combined catchment population of approximately 550,000. The On-call commitment will be 1:7.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There is a well established stone service supported by a dedicated interventional radiologist for percutaneous surgery, flexible video uretero-renoscopes with a stone laser and mobile lithoriptor. Also for those trained in HoLEP there is a high power Holmium laser acquired at the start of the Pandemic with a plan to develop a urology network wide service.

These are additional posts to an expanding team and appointment to the posts is expected to strengthen and further develop the Urological services in Shropshire, Telford, Wrekin and Mid-Wales. You will have an interest in General Urology.

All consultants retain a commitment to provide core urological services and participate in the Urological on-call rota.

The Department has two SpR posts from the West Midlands Training Scheme and students from Keele University providing the opportunity to teach the incoming workforce; students and trainees. The Trust has been a well-established Teaching Hospital for medical students since August 2017 in conjunction with Keele University Medical School.  The Medical School consistently achieves a very high rating in the National Student Survey being placed in the top ten since 2014.
