The Role

This is an advert for a Consultant in Palliative Medicine, 10 sessions per week, covering the inpatient unit at the Severn Hospice (Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury, site). The post-holder will take part in a 1 week in 5 second-on call rota and will be part of the existing team of 4 Palliative Medicine Consultants who work in the region. It is an ideal job for a first-time or experienced Consultant.

Candidates for this role must have GMC registration and recent experience within the NHS.

The Department

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing Consultant cover for Perry ward (12 beds) at the Shrewsbury hospice. This busy ward is supported by staff grade and GP trainees and serves patients from Shropshire and mid-Wales. The unit has increasing numbers of patients with non-malignant conditions: we already have a nationally-recognised service for patients with Motor Neurone Disease, also specific services developed for people with respiratory disorders end stage renal disease.

The unit has an ‘Outreach’ team of specialist nurses and Consultant outpatient clinics.  The site has a 0.6WTE community Consultant, covering Shropshire. The hospice is a professorial unit and has links with the Universities of Chester, Keele and Wolverhampton.

The contract rests with Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust (SaTH) - our local Trust - so the successful candidate will have an NHS contract and part of the NHS pension scheme, if desired.

The Hospice/Hospitals

The hospice has just celebrated its 30 year anniversary. It has inpatient sites at Telford and Shrewsbury - a total of 23 beds.  We also have a centre in North Powys - supporting local communities and delivering specialist palliative care. The hospice has a strong reputation for teaching in the region and has strong links with local hospitals, GPs and Out of Hours Services. We train Foundation Doctors, Specialist Trainees in Palliative Medicine and GP trainees as well as staff nurses. The Shrewsbury site is creating a new ‘Living Well’ centre at the Bicton site to support outpatient and day services.

Hospitals are located in both Shrewsbury and Telford and feature exemplary teams of hardworking individuals.

Shropshire is a beautiful county located between the West Midlands and North Wales. Whilst rural and home to the Shropshire Hills, it is anything but sleepy. The county is bustling with idyllic towns including Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow, with plenty to do regardless of your interests. More information can again be found under further links.

We are ideally located between the north and the south making travelling around the UK extremely easy. As well as being only a short distance from major cities and busy transport links including Birmingham airport, our county also borders with beautiful north Wales which is abundant in outdoor activities, brilliant beaches, and thrilling scenery.
