An excellent opportunity has arisen to join the Paediatric Department at The Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust. We are seeking to appoint a Substantive Paediatric Consultant with a specialist interest in paediatric cardiology to compliment the department. The successful applicant will join the 16 consultants. The post has risen due to a retirement. The post holder will ensure we have 2 consultant within each subspecialty. The post holder will look after children with general paediatric problems and cardiac problems in one of the largest acute District General Hospital Paediatric departments in the Country serving a catchment population of over 0.5 million. This will offer a chance to practice paediatric cardiology at large scale for someone interested in this area of paediatrics.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be part of the paediatric team delivering high quality care to children at 2 sites. The post attracts 10PAs. The successful candidate will deliver acute care at our inpatient facility at Princess Royal Hospital, Telford; Outpatient clinics at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital & at Princess Royal Hospital. Cardiology clinics will be an integral part of the clinics delivered by the post holder. Tertiary support will be available from cardiology team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital (BCH). Visiting clinics by cardiologists from BCH are running every month at both sites. The candidate should have CCT in paediatrics with SPIN in Paediatric cardiology

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties of the post are similar to all of the substantive Consultants and include:

  • Acute General Paediatrics – Consultant of the week on a 1 in 14 rota and as support consultant 1 in 14 rota
  • Acute General on call on a 1 in 7 (split between RSH non-resident, and PRH resident on call 4:30pm to 9:30pm, then non-resident overnight) supporting the RCPCH recommendations and 7 day working NHSE standards.
  • General Paediatric Outpatient Clinics - Consultant led new and follow-up patients
  • Speciality clinics – Cardiology at the PRH and RSH sites, Oncology ECHO clinic, along with combined cardiac clinics with visiting consultants from Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
  • General ward duties, including patient reviews and day to day assistance with management of Paediatric cardiology patients
  • 1 in 7 weekends general paediatric cover split between RSH and PRH.
  • 1 in 7 weekend non-resident consultant cover split between PRH and RSH
  • On-site accommodation available for on-calls.
