Celebrating World Pharmacists Day: Meet Belov, one of SaTH's newly qualified Pharmacists
Every year on 25th September, World Pharmacists Day shines a spotlight on the vital role pharmacists play in healthcare systems across the globe. At The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH), we’re proud to celebrate the dedication, expertise, and compassion of our pharmacy team. Today we're hearing from Belov, one of our newly qualified pharmacists, about her route into the world of Pharmacy at SaTH.
"Hi, I’m Belov. I’m 23 years old and currently working as a Band 6 rotational pharmacist here at SaTH. When I'm not at work, I enjoy going to RnB nights, spending time with my family, and trying out new recipes - however that doesn't always go to plan!"
"I started my pharmacy journey back in 2020 at the height of the pandemic, when I enrolled at University in south England to study for 4 years for a Master's degree in Pharmacy. I also worked part-time alongside my degree as a pharmacy assistant and dispenser, which gave me great experience in the field. Following completion of my studies, I did a further year of on-the-job training as a pre-registration pharmacist in an NHS Hospital near to where I was living at the time. After qualifying, I returned to Shropshire to be closer to my family and begin my career as a qualified pharmacist!"
Belov told us it's in a Pharmacist's nature to want to be the go-to person who can answer all questions about medication in detail! She said, "What I love about being a pharmacist is the opportunity to be the person people turn to for answers about their medication. As a rotational pharmacist, I get to work across different clinical areas, which means I’m constantly learning. However, it also means I need to be a bit of a generalist."
"That’s why I’m passionate about progressing in my career and specialising in a single clinical area. This allows me to deepen my understanding and use my clinical judgment even more effectively. I also really enjoy teaching and mentoring, and I’d love to be in a position where I can support other pharmacists and guide doctors and consultants in their prescribing decisions."
"SaTH has been very supportive of my development. The role I applied for included a step up to Band 7, which comes with a sponsored diploma and the option of doing an independent prescribing qualification."
When asked about motivation at work, Belov said: "Like every member of the NHS I am passionate about keeping people happy and healthy. I take pride in being able to provide clarity to patients and their families, and helping them understand what each medication is for. This makes it less overwhelming for them, improving compliance and therefore preventing further admissions."
Did Belov have anything to say to anyone thinking about a career at SaTH? "The NHS offers some of the best benefits out there, from pension contributions and discounts to generous holiday and sick pay which makes you feel secure that you'll be taken care of in the event of unexpected ailments and old age. There’s also extra compensation for working unsociable hours like nights and bank holidays."
"But beyond the perks, there’s a real sense of pride in being part of the NHS, knowing how hard our teams work and what a difference we make to people's lives. There is a great sense of team and belonging here at SaTH, the staff are friendly and approachable and I have always felt that I can speak to anyone, no matter their job title, and they're willing to help and guide me as a newcomer."
