Job overview

 

The postholder will lead and manage the clinical pharmacy technician and technical officer services across the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust, overseeing both medicines management and dispensary operations. 

They will ensure safe, effective, and efficient delivery of services including medicines reconciliation, assessment of patients’ own medicines, dispensing, patient counselling, and coordination of medicine supply.

A key part of the role is to provide proactive, patient-focused clinical pharmacy support, promoting safe, effective, and cost-efficient drug use to improve patient flow and continuity of care.

The postholder will lead, develop, and support clinical pharmacy technicians and associated staff, managing induction, training, appraisal, and performance to maintain high service standards.

They will champion quality improvement, patient safety, and clinical governance, contributing to audit, research, and adherence to Trust, GPhC, and CQC standards. Working closely with senior pharmacy leaders, the postholder will drive the ongoing development of medicines management and dispensary services, ensuring they remain responsive and high performing.

In this leadership role, the postholder will act as a role model, ensuring professional, accurate, and efficient practice, and supporting a high-quality service aligned with Trust values.

 

Main duties of the job

 

To deliver and maintain an efficient ward-based service to ensure the accurate and timely supply of medicines. This service will include 

  • Accurate medicines reconciliation
  • Interpretation of medical notes where necessary
  • Assessment of patients’ own drugs
  • Manages the technical work of the Dispensary at RSH and supports the Senior Pharmacy Technician for Dispensary at PRH
  • Ensures the efficient and prompt supply of patient labelled medicines to the wards, clinics, departments and outpatients.
  • Co-operating with other members of staff in providing an efficient pharmaceutical service

Be responsible for the operational management of the pharmacy technician and assistant technical officers services supporting of the delivery of patient focused high quality clinical care.

Ensure any quality management systems linked to pharmacy clinical services are adhered to and are kept current always encompassing best practice and support clinical governance within the care group.

To be responsible for the management, supervision, co-ordination and development of the technical workforce within the medicines management and dispensary technical teams across both sites. This includes recruitment, evaluation of work, identification of training needs, appraisal and continuing professional development (CPD)
