Job overview

  • To function as an expert clinical practitioner within their designated clinical area. To deliver direct patient care whilst, managing, leading, co-ordinating and overseeing nursing practice.
  • The post holder carries 24 hour continuing responsibility for the co-ordination and monitoring of all clinical activities within their  designated clinical area.
  • To ensure that there is efficient and effective utilisation of all resources required to deliver optimum quality care to their client group.
  • The post holder will deputise for the Clinical Nurse Manager in his / her absence, driving forward evidence based practice and taking responsibility for the supervision of staff and the policies and practices that operate within their clinical area.
  • The postholder will primarily work Monday to Friday office hours but will participate in out of hours working to support service delivery

Main duties of the job

  • Lead and manage ward staff to ensure clear roles, performance, and conduct. Maximise bed use through operational strategies and deputise for the Clinical Nurse Manager when needed. Support management infrastructure aligned with corporate goals, oversee budgets, and promote innovative working. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to maintain high-quality care and positive patient experience. Implement clinical policies, maintain environment standards, liaise with external agencies, and lead staff through change.
  • Supervise nursing practice, ensuring patient needs are assessed and care plans followed. Act as clinical resource, lead care standards, promote safe handling, and monitor clinical performance.
  • Maintain accurate patient records and effective communication with patients, families, and staff. Support staff during stressful situations and manage communication issues.
  • Encourage staff development through appraisals, mentorship, and training, ensuring mandatory training completion.
  • Participate in audits, research, and involve patients in service planning.
  • Adhere to HR policies, managing recruitment, induction, performance, and disciplinary processes. Ensure accurate use of PAS and electronic systems.
