An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly team at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH). This is a 1-year fixed term post available in Microbiology, covering maternity leave from August 2026.
The Microbiology department is looking to appoint a Biomedical Scientist to assist with the provision of a diagnostic service and support the delivery of a 7 days per week service as part of a 37.5 hour working week - including weekends and bank/public holidays. Experience of working in an NHS Microbiology laboratory would be preferred.
Main duties of the job
Assist in the provision of a diagnostic service.
Perform competently a range of laboratory techniques and procedures in one or more section(s) of the Microbiology department either singly, or as part of a team, that equate to the training and level of responsibility of a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered BMS.
Supervise support workers, students and other untrained or unqualified staff in the performance of tests according to standard operating procedures.
Work flexibly, as part of a team to support the delivery of a
7 days per week service (including weekends and bank holidays).

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital (SaTH) Pathology Services are accredited to UKAS standards.
The Microbiology department is equipped with BD Bactec blood culture analysers, Beckman Coulter Iris iQ Sprint urinalysis, Bruker MALDI-TOF, Beckman Coulter Microscan Walkaway AST systems, Hologic Panther Molecular platform and a Biomerieux Vidas 3 serology analyser.
The department is an approved IBMS/HCPC training laboratory and continuous professional development is actively encouraged.
The Trust
The two SATH Hospitals, The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford are just a 30 minute drive apart. Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.
Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Hospital is a specialist orthopaedic hospital in the outskirts of Oswestry, the Blood Science service is provided by SATH.
