This position is for an apprentice to develop a broad range of skills within a Medical Engineering environment. The position will take a progressive and developing route for servicing and repair of equipment within a medical engineering. 

The Apprentice will gain an HNC/HTQ Qualification in Electrical & Electronic Engineering at a local college.

·       Any age post full-time education 16+ 

·       Cannot already be on an Apprenticeship or any Government funded training,  

·       Cannot have a qualification at the same or higher level in the same vocational area. (There needs to be significant new learning in line with the Apprenticeship Standard) 

·       Has been a UK resident for 3 or more years. 

              OR

·      Meets the eligible and valid residency status and permission to work in the UK criteria in Annex A of the linked funding document:

National Apprenticeship Wage: 2025 -26 (w.e.f. 1st April)

Year 1:

An apprentice of any age in Year 1 of an apprenticeship.  £7.55/hour (£14,722.50 p.a. approx. Based on 37.5hrs/wk.)   

Year 2 onwards:

Under 18 = £7.55/hour (£14,722.50 p.a. approx. Based on 37.5hrs/wk.) = Nat. Min. Wage

18 - 20 yrs. = £10.00/hr (£19,500 p.a. approx. - based on 37.5hrs/wk.)  = Nat. Min. Wage

21 + yrs. = £12.21/hr (£23,809.50 p.a. approx. - based on 37.5hrs/wk.) = Nat. Min. & Nat. Living Wage.

 

 

Main duties of the job

 

  • The apprentice will be required to carry out the following tasks under the direct supervision of a Medical Engineering Technicians and Team leaders and in accordance with the MES Quality management System.
  • To carry out Medical Equipment commissioning, calibration, safety checks, repair- maintenance, adaptation to manufacturer's specifications and ultimately safe disposal.
  • To certify that all necessary calibration tasks are performed regularly on equipment so that it can be used safely, correctly and ensuring patient safety and accuracy in use.
  • Requisitioning of stock and materials for stores, receipt of goods, etc, including sourcing, cost coding and pricing.
  • To ensure the operational safety, functional use of equipment and compliance with the appropriate safety standards and regulations.
    Attend such training and updating courses as appropriate and to keep abreast of new technology for continual professional development (CPD).
  • To undertake administrative duties associated with the technical work, such as updating of appropriate records which are all legally binding documents.
  • To liaise with manufacturers and external agencies for equipment that may not be serviced in-house.
  • To complete Service Records of all the items in use and be responsible for the data entry

Medical Engineering scope is approximately 32000 medical devices of which almost 21000 belong to SaTH.  MES also service external contracts with Shropshire Community, as well as some private customers.  The department is split between two main sites (RSH & PRH) with a maintenance team based at each site.  The department is also responsible for the service and maintenance support for the Renal Service in Shropshire, which includes three Renal Units plus a cohort of home dialysis patients.
