We are seeking to recruit two Specialty Doctors in Upper GI and Bariatric Surgery to commence as soon as possible, subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks.

The Unit has a special interest in the minimally invasive management of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, GORD, oesophageal disorders, gallstone disease, and laparoscopic hernia repair. There is an interest to develop an emergency cholecystectomy service.

There are currently four all day theatre lists, in a dedicated bariatric theatre, with state of the art equipment. In addition Upper GI and Bariatric out-patient clinics are held at both RSH and PRH.

The majority of elective and emergency adult general surgical care is delivered at RSH, although there is departmental commitment to supporting services at PRH with a non-resident rota, particularly supporting the ED, Women’s and Children’s Centre, and in-patient medicine.

It is a 10 Programmed Activity post (9 PA’s allocated to direct patient care and 1 PA for SPA). In addition there is an on-call commitment: one post is 1:6 Non-resident on call at Princess Royal Hospital and the second post 1:12 resident on call at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. These on call commitments may change according to service requirements and the career aspiration and needs of the post holder.

The principal role of the post holder will be to contribute to the delivery of a first class Upper GI and Bariatric service, as part of the multidisciplinary team.

It is desirable that you will possess some laparoscopic skill, but it is anticipated that you will have ample opportunity to acquire advanced laparoscopic skills.

It is expected that you will adopt a flexible approach to the training opportunities available in order to maximise the experience available to you. The work will be matched to the skills of the successful candidate.

This is a non-training grade post designed for Surgeons who have completed their Core Training and would like to expand their upper-GI experience before entering Higher Surgical Training, and therefore will have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a Specialty Training Programme in the relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty or shall have equivalent experience and competencies. There will also be opportunities for more experienced surgeons to further develop their skills in advanced upper GI surgery.

Applicants must have MRCS or equivalent, and preferably more than two years experience in General Surgery, and full GMC registration with Licence To Practice.

If you are interested in this position please contact Mr James Rink, Consultant Upper GI and Bariatric Surgeon  for an informal discussion on 01743 261000 ext 2417/2418 or
