CONSULTANT ANAESTHETIST (General – with a difficult airway/ENT interest)

An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant Anaesthetist with an interest in difficult airway and ENT anaesthesia to join the Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust. This job will be based at the Princess Royal Hospital with some theatre sessions at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The Role

The post is full time and will consist of 10 PA’s plus the opportunity to take up further clinical duties if you wish in line with other colleagues in the department. At present there are 2.5 SPAs allocated of which 1 is for revalidation.

The on call commitment will be at the Princess Royal Hospital, 1 in 12 covering theatres ITU and ENT, with the development of our services we are actively recruiting more Intensivists in order to split this rota in the near future.

Theatre sessions will take place at either hospital, Princess Royal Hospital or the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital depending on the interest of the successful applicant.

You must possess full registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practice and it is essential that you hold Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia, or be eligible for CCT within 6 months of the interview, CESR or European Community Rights.

The Department

The Head and Neck Service at the Princess Royal Hospital encompasses the full remit of Ear, Nose and Throat and maxillofacial work, except for lateral and anterior skull base.

It is a vibrant and developing centre with recent new appointments on the surgical side seeking to further expand the service to include transoral tracheal work. It is a recognised oncology centre for head and neck cancer. Major resection and reconstruction work, with free flap surgery, is undertaken on a regular basis. Major facial trauma is managed at Telford.

The paediatric head and neck service in general caters for 2 years and upwards, and down to 1 year for specific clinical conditions. The Princess Royal Hospital takes all the emergency head and neck work for Shropshire – adult and paediatric, so the candidate must have an enthusiasm for both the difficult airway and head and neck emergency work.

Trainees undertake modules in head and neck and difficult airway at Telford so an interest in teaching these skills would be helpful.

Although this post is for a person with a specific interest in the difficult airway and ENT anaesthesia, subspecialty interests for theatre sessions may be accommodated in various specialities provided at the Princess Royal Hospital and Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The Trust

The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust serve the total population of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and mid-Wales, nearly half a million people. The Trust has Associate Teaching School status and has medical students attending from Keele University.

It will make SaTH a better place to work, in turn making it a better place to receive care.

Over the last three years we have been building the foundations of a better future through our work with Virginia Mason and our own transforming care institute (TCI). We have introduced a leadership academy with more opportunities for development so all our leaders support, coach and perform at the highest levels, celebrate the hard work of our staff and recognise the wonderful improvements that are being made each and every day. This is a vital stepping stone to ensure we are equipped for our better future and realising our vision of providing the safest and kindest care for our patients. Leadership is about supporting teams to be the best they can be. As we move forward together it is vital all our teams understand their important role in delivering this brighter future for everyone.
