Job overview

  • Provide overall operational management of the Radiotherapy Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, including recruitment, staff appraisal and continuous professional development.
  • Provide delivery of radiotherapy treatment within national and local guidelines, and ensure that national targets and initiatives are delivered within the constraints of current resources within oncology
  • Take a lead role for commissioning of the radiotherapy service to provide a service that conforms to the national standards of care required by the Cancer Reform Strategy and includes the implementation of NRAG. Ensure that other departments within oncology conform to national standards of care
  • Take a lead role on workforce development to provide a skilled workforce is in place to provide the capacity with the technical skills to meet national cancer targets
  • Take responsibility for implementation of departmental and Trust policies including Quality Assurance and HR policies (discipline, attendance management, sickness management grievances and complaints)
  • Liaise with all sections within the Oncology Services, Trust and with external bodies
  • Manage the radiotherapy budget and physical resources
  • Ensure that the needs of the patient are identified and met at all times
  • Take responsibility for the development of current services to meet future needs

Main duties of the job

  1. Provide effective management of the Radiotherapy Department including  paying due regard to the needs of the patients, staff and service
  2. Work closely with the lead clinician, Centre Manager for Oncology and Haematology and other staff groups on strategic developments of the radiotherapy service. Take a lead role as appropriate, including the presentation of cases of need to appropriate bodies in order to generate understanding of complex concepts around service delivery and future planning. Communicate with regional and supra-regional organisations when required 
  3. Take a lead role in the procurement of new equipment
  4. Take proactive steps, working closely with other staff groups as appropriate, to develop and implement continuous service improvement: developing the workforce in line with regional and national requirements
  5. Take a lead role in setting the objectives and the policies of the department ensuring that they are met
  6. Take responsibility for the promotion of morale, discipline and good working relations within the oncology service and the Radiotherapy Department
  7. Exercise financial control over the radiotherapy and oncology budgets and monitor manpower and other resources within the radiotherapy service and other departments within the oncology service. Carrying out whatever corrective action has been indentified as appropriate
