The Role

We are seeking to appoint a ninth and tenth Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH).  These positions are offered as a six month locum contract with a possibility of being extending further. The intention of the Trust is to make these positions permanent following demonstration of service and financial benefits from an expanded Surgical Department. The Trust provides services to the county of Shropshire and a sizeable part of the adjacent Welsh County of Powys with a combined catchment population of in excess of 500,000. The Colorectal Surgical Unit is primarily based at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. All Consultant staff are also required to work at The Princess Royal Hospital depending on service needs. These are new appointment to attend to increasing service needs and to increase sub-specialisation in the Unit. The appointees will join the existing 8 full-time Colorectal Surgeons and attracts 11 Programmed Activities per week and an on-call commitment. We are looking for Surgeons with commitment, drive and a desire to make an impact transforming the delivery of surgical care.

The Department

The Colorectal Surgical Unit has a high volume case load with approximately 350 new diagnoses a year with over 300 curative resections, including 110 rectal resections. In addition there is TEMS service with an expanding practice (currently approximately 25 TEMS resections done each year). The Unit is regularly in the top ten high volume centres for elective colorectal cancer resections in the UK (ACPGBI). All of the 8 Consultant Colorectal Surgeons have a laparoscopic practice with approximately 200 resections per year performed laparoscopically.

A wide range of sub-specialty practice is offered including inflammatory bowel disease (including pouch surgery and surgery for enterocutaneous fistula), early rectal cancer (with TEMS) and complex recto-vaginal endometriosis work undertaken as combined laparoscopic procedures with our colleagues in gynaecology. There is an established and accredited pelvic floor service and specialist combined MDT with urogynaecology led by 2 Colorectal Surgeons supported by a pelvic floor Nurse Specialist.  The service undertakes EAUS, anorectal manometry and defaecating proctograms on site. A full range of pelvic floor surgical procedures including laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy (LVMR) is offered.

The unit currently consists of 8 Consultant Colorectal Surgeons, 3 Specialist Trainees and 2 Core Trainees from the HEE (WM) deanery, 2 Trust Grade Surgeons and 4 Foundation Year doctors. We also provide a Royal College of Surgeons of England Approved Senior Clinical Fellowship post in Colorectal Surgery. The Unit has a strong commitment to surgical education and 3 Colorectal Surgeons have successfully completed the LAPCO Training the Trainers course.

We have modern laparoscopic equipment in two dedicated theatres including a range of modern surgical energy devices and 4KHD stacks. Colorectal resections are managed in an established Enhanced Recovery Programme.

We are active in the teaching of both Medical Students and Surgical Trainees and we are an Associate Teaching Hospital for Keele Medical School.

We would welcome a subspecialty interest to complement and enhance those of the Unit, subject to discussion with the successful candidate. The ability to perform laparoscopic colorectal resections and JAG Accreditation for Colonoscopy are requirements of the post.

Our Hospitals

Our Hospitals are located in Shrewsbury and Telford and are brimming with exemplary teams of hardworking individuals.

It is a particularly exciting time to join the Trust as we have recently started working collaboratively with the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. We are one of only 5 UK hospitals to receive this support, from what is regarded as the safest hospital in the world. This collaboration means employees can benefit from the KPO (Kaizen Promotion Office) and value Stream work, gaining valuable help and guidance regardless of your level of expertise. It poses a unique opportunity to make a difference and we hope you will want to be a part of our journey. More about this can be found under further links.

Shropshire

Shropshire is a beautiful county located between the West Midlands and North Wales. Whilst rural and home to the Shropshire Hills it is anything but sleepy. The county is bustling with idyllic towns including Shrewsbury, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow, with plenty to do regardless of your interests. More information can again be found under further links.

We are ideally located between the north and the south making travelling around the UK extremely easy. As well as being only a short distance from major cities and busy transport links including Birmingham airport, our county also borders with beautiful north Wales which is abundant in outdoor activities, brilliant beaches, and thrilling scenery.
