We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant anaesthetist with a special interest in Obstetric anaesthesia to join us at SaTH.
This post will include at least one day a week sessional commitment to the maternity suite in the Women and Children’s centre at the Princess Royal Hospital. The successful applicant will be expected to join with 5 other Consultants with an interest in obstetric anaesthesia.
There are around 5000 deliveries undertaken a year. The unit has a low epidural (21%) and section rate (16%).
There are currently 3 elective caesarean section lists a week, as well as daily labour ward and emergency maternity theatre cover. There is a business case in the pipeline to increase the elective section sessions. There is also a weekly high risk ante natal clinic. The unit runs regular MDT obstetric emergency course and the Prompt course, both of which have an important anaesthetic input. There are 6 middle grade anaesthetists who are resident on the labour ward to cover emergencies after hours.
The on call commitment will be at the Princess Royal Hospital, 1 in 16 covering theatres ITU and Obstetrics. In addition there is a 1 in 17 weekend commitment mornings only. With the development of our services we are actively recruiting more intensivists in order to split this rota in the near future.
Theatre sessions will take place at either hospital, Princess Royal Hospital or the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, depending on the interest of the successful applicant.
The post is full time and will consist of 10 PA’s plus the opportunity to take up further clinical duties if you wish to be in line with other colleagues in the department. At present there are 2.5 SPAs allocated of which 1 is for revalidation.

You must possess full registration with the General Medical Council with a license to practise and it is essential that you hold Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia, or be eligible for CCT within 6 months of the interview, CESR or European Community Rights.
